There is just something about welding that just grabs you once you start. You need to make it your own and do the best you can. It really is an art and can be a lot fun when you get into it. I started out of my garage 7 years ago and have never looked back. It's amazing how time flies when your having fun!
One of the biggest things to know when getting into welding is learning the proper distance to hold your gun from the material and moving the puddle a consistent speed. Of course, machine set up is mandatory for a decent weld . If you can manage these three things, you will learn at a decent rate.
When beginning, you need to understand that you will not make a pretty weld off the hop! This is a big thing for many, as you may watch another welder make it look easy and get frustrated easy when they themselves don't do the same. Patience will go a long way when starting. Remember to go slow and never rush the puddle. Watching the lead of the puddle is key to making sure your weld penetration is developing. If you lead too fast you will miss areas of the weld and will have holes in your weld; too slow and the weld will bunch up and look lumpy. A smooth steady pace will develop over time and remember, smooth concentric circles are key to a decent looking weld. If you follow these first steps, you will be on your way to mastering your welding in a decent time period. Remember to not let yourself get frustrated and take a break if it becomes too much . You can do this and when you consistently attempt it you will develop greater skills over time! Never give up!!
